We have really enjoyed our Jolly Phonics scheme and some children are now coming to the end of Phase two. Some children will now be learning to read and write words with graphemes like ee, oo, sh, ch, ai etc… For those children who are not ready to move on, they will continue to revisit the letters covered so far until they are secure with them.
In writing we will now be concentrating on using the letters to build words. We are learning to build simple sentences using our high frequency words and have a go at sounding out unfamiliar words. We do not give the children words to copy or spell words for them, as they learn to write phonetically and have a go! We are learning about using capital letters and full stops.
We are learning to use a range of strategies to decode when reading. We are learning about the role of the author, illustrator and publisher.

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a super Christmas. I can’t believe a whole term has gone by and how much we have achieved. The children are now very settled into our class routines and are really growing up.
I just thought I would give you an insight into what will be going on this term. Our topic this half term will be ‘People Who help us’ and next half term ‘Houses and Homes’ linked to Fairy Tales. All our work will centre around these topics. We will also be having a special Chinese New Year week this half term.
I have booked a trip for next half term for Friday 19th March to go to Tatton Hall in Knutsford on a living history day in the mansion which is a fantastic experience based on the story of Cinderella. There will be a letter to follow when we have confirmed the coaches, but if you want to come with us you could book the day off but let me know as it will be on a first come first served basis! We won’t fit you all on the coach so we may ask a few of you to follow us in cars. I am also going to try and arrange a visit to the vets at West Heath precinct, so the children can meet Vet James and find out how they look after the animals.
Foundation will have our parents evening on Monday 8th and Wednesday 10th March from 3.30 - 5.30pm for you to see your child’s work and have a chat with me about their progress. If possible please come well before your appointment time so you can have a good look in their books and also have a look at their Assessment booklets.
If you have any queries or questions please don’t hesitate to come to see me, although please try to make an appointment for after school, as I am on my own first thing in the morning and the children need me with them so I can’t stop and chat. Please try to have the kids at school for 8.55am so they all line up and come in together and I can get my register done before 9.15!!
Looking forward to a great term!
Kindest regards Miss Marsh
Our Special Days
Our P.E days will be on a Tuesday (outdoor P.E) and a Thursday (indoor P.E). We very rarely get to do outdoor P.E at the moment, but just incase we do please ensure the children have warm jogging bottoms and tops, and trainers so they don’t slip. Please ensure the kit is named... even small things like naming both pumps as they do go walkabouts!
Literacy
We are continuing to learn to recognise, write, order and use number to 10, and 20 if we are ready. We are learning to add and take away using resources to help us and learn about the add and take away signs to build number sentences.
We will begin to use mathematical names for solid 3D shapes and use junk modelling materials to make emergency vehicles. We will also learn measuring vocabulary like longer and shorter to compare the length of different vehicles.
Things you need to bring to school!
* Please send your child in with a drink of water (in a labelled bottle) as I do let the children have access to a drink all day and I will try to remind the children to bring them home for washing and topping up each evening.
* The children are offered milk and a piece of fruit each day. However once they turn five they are not eligible for a free milk, but you can send them in with 20p to buy some with their toast.
* We will be sending home your child’s Spring term targets soon. Please return them once you have signed and dated on the bottom.
Thank you!
HOMEWORK!!! The children have taken well to their high frequency word key rings and love it when they receive new words. Please keep practising these at home. We will continue to try to do this every week with Mrs Spender’s help. I have become aware that some children are only able to read their words if we do it in order, but if we mix the words up they struggle a little. Please make sure you always learn them in different orders, we will now be doing this at school. Some clever children are also associating a word with the colour card, so please practise their words in a variety of fonts and on different colours, so they can read the words in books and not just off their key rings. Please continue to learn to spell the words too.
Some children are now excellent at changing their own books in the morning and handing their diaries in for checking, but others not so good! If your child’s not changing their books regularly to read with you at home (at least three times a week) please give them a gentle reminder. Please fill in the book they have read and date it so I can track their progress.
Maths games will start to come home on a Wednesday. These games are good fun and the children always enjoy playing them with all the family. Please send them back on a MONDAY, or I won’t have time to check and re-date them. Please make sure you return the Maths game with all the pieces and let me know if you have had a game with missing pieces so I can trace it back.
Please try to send Jolly Phonics homework in on a Monday, not in dribs and drabs through the week, as I only have one night to mark it, date it, put in the next sheets and get it out again on the Tuesday! Thank you to all those parents who support us so well and do such lovely creative activities at home with the children. We appreciate it may seem a lot at times but it is paying off in the children’s progress… they are flying and we are thrilled with how much they love Jolly Phonics!!

SPARE UNDERWEAR - I am still very low on spare knickers, socks and tights (just in case of little accidents) If you have any spare I would be grateful. If your child is sent home with spare school uniform please return them as soon as possible.
NEWSPAPER AND JUNK MODELLING - Please can you send in any newspaper and materials for junk modelling.
BAKING MONEY - Please could you now send in another £1 for baking and making activities in a named envelope. We will be getting some nice things for our Chinese New Year topic and much more. Many thanks!!
