If I haven't personally said so, may I take this opportunity of wishing you a very happy and healthy new year.
This term is a busy and crucially important one for children in Year 6.
You are probably aware that during this term, the children begin to prepare for their end of Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Test. We will begin to revise the different types of reading and writing that will occur. In Mathematics, we will continue to teach the daily lesson according to the curriculum but will also be looking at the types of questions that they will come across in each strand of learning. In science, the children will begin to focus on the areas that they found most difficult from analysis of the December tests. Although this year there will not be an externally moderated test for science, we will still have to publish our teacher assessment levels and the children will sit a past paper in science to support our teacher moderation. Homework will reflect this work.
At Quinta, we do not believe that the children should slavishly work through past papers but we do aim to prepare them for what lies ahead, so that they achieve a level that truly reflects what they deserve and are entitled to. We also believe that the children should continue to work on the curriculum as much as possible, so that they are ready for the next phase of their education. The children have been placed into two groups for Literacy and Numeracy, with Mrs Bartels taking the smaller group to boost and nurture the talents that we know the children have.
Many thanks for the lovely presents at Christmas, your kind comments and continued support of our wonderful and improving school.
Mr W E Sharpe

Spring Term
2011
This is the basic structure of staffing during the week. Mrs Bartels be working with the smaller set in their English and Maths lessons. Mrs Brough teaches the class on Friday mornings.
Homework Reminder!
In Literacy we will be studying narrative reading and writing and will be moving on to examine poetry. Mrs Brough is working with the children on improving writing on Fridays though the class text, Why the Whales Came. Later this term, we will be examining non-narrative forms of reading and writing.
We will begin the term by looking at place value, multiplication and division, including use of percentages in problem solving. Further to this, we will be working on securing number facts and shapes, calculating, measuring and handling data.
Science
In Science we will be revising the Earth and Beyond and will look at the key facts in the KS2 curriculum. Our other areas of study will be Living things in their environment (including Climate Change and Deforestation, Humans and Other Animals and Green Plants.
Our main topic this term is a Geography one and we are studying Rainforests. If you have any photos, artefacts or books that you think may help, I would be grateful if we could borrow them.
This is the timetable for homework. The length and complexity of the homework tasks will depend upon the needs of your child and the expectations that we have for them. Therefore, there will be differences in the homework that is given for the Literacy and Numeracy sets.

Well Done!
Well done to:
All the children who have competed in the Interhouse football and tag-rugby competitions. A big thank you to Ethan H and Chloe for ably carrying out their tasks as head boy and head girl last term. Congratulations go to Seb and Lizzy on their appointment as this term's head boy and head girl.
Many thanks for all the wonderful artefacts that were leant to us for our topic on World War II last term. We really enjoyed looking at them and discussing their purpose.
